In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, we demonstrate how to administer several puffs of albuterol via an asthma inhaler to a dog under general anesthesia. This Chihuahua had just undergone an endotracheal lavage (ENL) to confirm the diagnosis of eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy. As the dog was hypoxemic and dyspneic (prior to ENL), several puffs of albuterol (depending on the patient’s size) were administered while the dog was recovering from the ENL. This is a uniquely modified anesthetic elbow that attaches to the anesthetic breathing system and allows administration of albuterol to the anesthetized patient. Several breaths should be given after administration of albuterol to aid in the distribution of the drug into the lower airway.
