In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, Dr. Amy Kaplan, cVMA, DACVECC, MRCVS, criticalist at Urgent Pet Care, reviews how to place an intraosseous (IO) catheter (specifically using the EZ-IO rotary device). With this device, veterinarians and veterinary technicians can achieve life-saving access to the circulatory system within just a few seconds! When would you want to use this nifty device? It’s a fabulous alternative to venous cutdowns in those patients with frustrating, challenging veins, or otherwise obstructive anatomy to placing venous catheters, and it’s often a quicker vascular access option for CPR than traditional venous catheterization.
