In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, Dr. Nancy Zimmerman, MS, CCRT, DACVS (with help from Dr. Jennifer Mahon, DACVECC too!) demonstrates how to place a MILA, over-the-wire, thoracostomy chest tube in a dog via the Seldinger technique. This procedure requires sedation (ideally with local anesthesia also), sterile technique, and appropriate equipment (including scrub material, drape, a MILA chest tube kit, suture, 3-way stopcock, adaptors, transparent film dressing, bandage material, etc.). This video, filmed at the Oquendo Center of the Viticus Group, demonstrates a procedure that emergency veterinarians must feel comfortable performing in the emergent/critically ill patient with pleural space disease (e.g., pleural effusion, pyothorax, pneumothorax, etc.).
