In this VetGirl video, we demonstrate how to perform a diagnostic peritoneal lavage (DPL). While this isn’t a common diagnostic procedure performed in the ER, knowing how to perform a DPL is essential when the clinician is suspicious of acute abdomen (e.g., septic peritonitis). By infusing 20-22 ml/kg of saline into the abdomen, we can then better evaluate the patient based on cytological evidence.
