In this VETgirl video, we demonstrate how to treat an abscess in a dog using surgical dissection, lavage, and drain placement. Depending on the severity, surgical correction of an abscess should be done under heavy sedation with or without local anesthesia or general anesthesia. In this case example, a severe swelling was noted in a dog’s limb. Sterile technique was used for initial aspirate, and cytology revealed purulent infection and inflammation. Surgical correction was then recommended for evaluation, lavage, and drain placement under aseptic technique.
