In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, we review how to perform a buccal mucosal bleeding time (BMBT) in a dog. A BMBT is often performed when a coagulation test [specifically, a prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and platelet count] are normal but other coagulopathies such as von Willebrands deficiency is suspected. Keep in mind that traditional coagulation testing (e.g., PT/PTT/PLT) should not be affected by vWF diseases, as there is no factor deficiency, per se. Likewise, platelet count should be assess prior to performing a BMBT, as this test is affected by thrombocytopenia. You can check out this additional video about how to do a BMBT in a dog here too!
