In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, a board-certified veterinary surgeon demonstrates how to perform a resection and anastomosis (R&A). Here, an 8-year-old FS Puggle presented for a 48-hour history of vomiting. This dog had a habit of licking hair off the floor and eating squeakers from toys. On presentation, this dog was both dehydrated and hypovolemic, and had abdominal pain. A 30 ml/kg crystalloid bolus was administered, along with pain medications and maropitant. Radiographs and ultrasound confirmed a complete intestinal obstruction and the patient was taken to surgery after initial fluid resuscitation. A gastrotomy was performed to remove a large trichobezoar; the stomach was then closed with a simple continuous layer, followed by an inverting layer. After running the bowel, a palpable squeaker FB was located in a segment of jejunum. A resection and anastomosis (what we’ll call an R&A from now on) was performed, as the tissue had questionable integrity.
