In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, we review how to perform a subconjunctival enucleation in a dog as demonstrated by Dr. Shelby Reinstein, MS, DACVO. Enucleation can provide pain relief from conditions such as unresponsive glaucoma, traumatic proptosis, and can provide diagnostic information via biopsy of the globe for intraocular lesions.  Of the 2 more common approaches to enucleation (i.e., subconjunctival, transpalpebral), the subconjunctival approach is best reserved for non infectious and non neoplastic diseases, while the transpalpebral approach may better contain conjunctival infections or neoplasia during removal.
