Treatment of Paraphimosis in a Dog

In this VETgirl video, we demonstrate how to treat paraphimosis in a dog. Paraphimosis is the inability to retract the penis back into the sheath. This can occur secondary to copulation or erection, or due to mechanical causes (e.g., hair around the tip of the prepuce that prevents retraction). While it’s not a life-threatening emergency, it does require prompt treatment to prevent further injury.

Treatment includes applying a hypertonic agent (like table sugar) to help reduce swelling, flushing off the sugar, applying lube (always lots of lube!), and gently retracting and manipulating the penis back into the sheath. Make sure to sedate you patient while you do this, and provide adequate pain control. Likewise, make sure that your patient can urinate appropriately, and reoccurrence doesn’t occur.
